Your Northern Home & Garden

Wednesday, June 25, 2008 4:00 p.m. (Adults)
Grass River Natural Area, Three Lakes Association and Torch Lake Protection Alliance will host “Your Northern Home & Garden,” on June 25, 2008 at Alden Depot. The program will focus on simple ways to make up-north homes and gardens eco-friendly.

The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. with Roberta Dow, Water Quality Educator, with MSU Extension speaking about Home-A-Syst, a program which helps homeowners evaluate their homes and property for pollution and health risks.

Greenbelt garden designs from Barker Creek, Cyman Gardens, Greenleaf and Pine Hill nurseries will be on display along with many more ideas for environmentally healthy gardening. Native plants will be available for purchase and there will be a drawing for a rain barrel.

The fun and informative Chain of Lakes Naturopoly board game will be for sale. Refreshments will be served.

“Your Northern Home and Garden” is open to the public and sponsored by Grass River Natural Area, Three Lakes Association & Torch Lake Protection Alliance with support from Antrim Soil Conservation District, MSU Extension and Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council and The Watershed Center.

5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament
Sunday, June 22, 2008 1:00 p.m. (registration)
Please Join Grass River Natural Area and Three Lakes Association for the 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Cedar River Golf Course. Enjoy 18 holes of golf at Cedar River Golf Course followed by dinner at Cedar River. Space is limited to first 128 golfers. The Four Person Scramble Shotgun Start begins at 2:30. Visit The Blue Heron Gallery
April
Visit the Blue Heron Gallery, 131 Ames Street, Elk Rapids, during the month of April to appreciate the fine artistic creations of over 100 Michigan artists. 10% of purchases during the month will be donated to Grass River Natural Area in continuing support to protect the Grass River watershed, and provide the community with opportunities that increase their knowledge, appreciation and stewardship of the natural environment. Bluebird Walks
Sundays, April 20 & 27, 11:00 a.m.
Take a free nature hike with a naturalist at Grass River Natural Area. Our destination is the open field on the Glacial Plain trail where participants will check out the bluebird houses that are part of a national monitoring project. On the way, look at the flora and fauna along these less traveled trails. Contact the Grass River Natural Area office at 231-533-8314 with questions.
Earth Day Celebration

Celebrate Earth Day at Grass River Natural Area and discover ways to live more simply. Explore how to make a solar water heater and a compost pile. Ride a bike to make electricity. Enjoy guided trail walks with a naturalist, worm races and games for all the young at heart. Then take home a worm composting starter kit, seeds for the garden and a white pine seedling to plant. Early Wetland Wildflowers at GRNA

The first signs of spring in the wetlands, new growth of carnivorous plants, and delicate flowers growing in the sphagnum moss are what participants will be exploring at Grass River Natural Area. Build a Bluebird House

Welcome the bluebirds back with a brand new house that you've built yourself. Daniel Proudfoot will take you step by step through the building process. Learn some facts about bluebirds and handy carpentry tricks. Bring a hammer. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Class size is limited. Please register early by calling 231-533-8314.

The Great Backyard Bird Count

Where are the birds hanging out this winter? Grass River Natural Area and the National Audubon Society want to know and you can help. Moonlight Ski & Owl Calling
